What does moving from Kent to Portugal involve?

It begins with the NIF, Portugal's tax number, which you need before renting or buying and before anything is shipped. Next come the right to reside, usually a residence visa for UK nationals, and proof of your Portuguese address. Why one loading matters so much
On a French move a second trip is an irritation. To Portugal it is effectively ruled out: the drive crosses France and most of the Iberian peninsula, with compulsory driver rest built in along the way.
So the planning changes. Every carton is on the list before the doors open. Every maybe, from the loft boxes to the garage workbench to the sideboard you are half minded to sell, gets a yes or no in advance.
Which route does a Kent removal to Portugal take?
Three countries, one vehicle. France first, south from the Channel to the Gironde. Spain next, entered in the Basque Country and crossed on the high plateau of Castilla y León. Portugal last, at the hill-country border post of Vilar Formoso.
Over the border, deliveries to Porto, Braga and the Minho go west on the A25 by way of Viseu and Aveiro; Lisbon, the Alentejo and the Algarve take the A23 south through Castelo Branco. It is a serious drive, and we plan and price it as one rather than pretending a vehicle can do it in a single push.
Why is the NIF the first thing to arrange?
If you remember one thing from this page, make it this: get the número de identificação fiscal before anything else. Your lease or purchase, your residence application and the customs file each carry it, so it has to exist before any of them can start.
With the NIF in place the rest follows: proof of the Portuguese address, your residence visa or evidence that the application is under way, and then the document that matters most.
The certificado de bagagem
You apply for the baggage certificate in the UK, at the Portuguese consulate covering your home address, and the consulate works from our inventory. That is exactly why the inventory has to be right: itemised, valued, in Portuguese, and matching what is actually on the vehicle.
If the certificate lists one thing and the load holds another, clearance stops. It is entirely avoidable with care at this end.
Can the furniture wait in Kent until Portugal is ready?
Yes. With the household in storage here, nothing has to leave until the tax number, the baggage certificate and the house are all ready, and then it leaves a single time. On this route that is worth more than on any other.
Delivering in Portugal
Down on the Algarve most villas and apartment blocks give a vehicle space to stop. Up in the hills behind Loulé, Tavira or Monchique it is another matter: private tracks that climb sharply and are not always surfaced.
The cities are harder. In Alfama or the Ribeira a lorry often cannot get within carrying distance of the door, so a window lift or a smaller shuttle vehicle is booked from Kent, never improvised on arrival.

How does a Kent load get to Portugal?
Entirely overland: the Channel crossing, then France top to bottom on its Atlantic side, then Spain corner to corner from the Basque border to the Portuguese frontier post at Vilar Formoso. Inside Portugal the vehicle forks for Porto in the north or for Lisbon and the Algarve in the south.
What is the NIF?
Portugal's taxpayer number, the número de identificação fiscal. Non-residents usually get one through a fiscal representative, or in person at a Finanças office. Sort it out early: landlords, notaries, banks and the consulate will all ask for it.
What is the certificado de bagagem?
A consular document, applied for in the UK ahead of departure from the Portuguese consulate that covers where you live. It records that what you are bringing is your used personal belongings, and it is built from the inventory. Everything at Portuguese clearance turns on it.
What if the load and the certificate do not match?
Clearance stops while someone reconciles them. In our experience no other single issue delays Portuguese moves as often. The fix lies at this end: an inventory written carefully enough that the certificate and the vehicle tell the same story.
Why store before a Portuguese move?
Because this is the longest drive we run, a second trip is impractical, and the Portuguese paperwork has more steps than the other three countries. Loading once, when everything is in place, beats loading in hope and waiting at a border.
Do you deliver to the Algarve?
Yes, regularly. Most coastal villas and apartments have workable access; hillside houses above the older towns can be reached by steep, narrow and sometimes unmade drives that need checking first.
What about Lisbon and Porto?
Steep cobbled streets, tight corners, and staircases narrower even than a Medway terrace. Alfama, Bairro Alto and Porto's Ribeira are genuinely difficult, and an external window lift is a normal answer there.
